A practice, not a destination
The best version of you is not someone you become once. It is someone you choose to be, again, on a Tuesday.
We talk about becoming “the best version of yourself” as if it were a place: work hard enough, read the right books, and one day you arrive and stay there. It does not work like that, and believing it does is one of the surest ways to feel like you are failing.
You are not a project to finish
The best version of you is not a finished product. It is a set of choices made over and over: to tell the truth in the meeting, to do the careful work nobody will notice, to reach out instead of waiting to be found, to rest before you break. Some days you make those choices. Some days you do not. Both kinds of day are part of it.
Watch what you practise
Whatever you do repeatedly, you get better at. That includes the things you would rather not be good at: hesitating, deferring, shrinking. If you practise holding back, you become skilled at holding back.
So the question is not “am I becoming my best self?” in the abstract. It is “what am I practising this week?” That question has an answer, and the answer can change on Monday.
An ordinary Tuesday
Pick one quality you admire in the person you want to become. Courage, generosity, focus, candour. Then find one ordinary moment this week to practise it on purpose. Not a grand gesture. An ordinary moment, done a little more bravely than usual.
That is the work. It is not glamorous, and it is enough.
